Winter Comes Early

With another winter pushing out Summer
before Autumn has taken the trees
the snow settles Sessions Peaks
before the changing of the leaves

I wonder at the loss.
Why can't I have
an Autumn this year?

The pumpkins are turning on the dying vine
Tomatoes burdened with green fruit
wilt beneath the first frost

I dream of leaves the colors of sunset
of cider and horse drawn wagons of hay
of crisp mornings and pleasant afternoons
not of shoveling the driveway

as the first flakes fall on green lawns
